SHINY PLUS vs Lumenis M22 vs Sciton BBL: IPL Systems Compared for Med Spas (2026)

If you're adding IPL (intense pulsed light) to a med spa menu, three names tend to come up: the Lumenis Stellar M22, Sciton's BBL HEROic, and SHINY PLUS from IDS Lasers. All three are flashlamp systems that treat pigment, redness and vessels, and support hair-removal and rejuvenation protocols. They differ in how they're built and what you're paying for.

This guide compares them on the published specs: filters, fluence, spot size, pulse control, cooling, and what else lives on the platform. Every spec below comes from the maker's own brochure or product page, linked at the end. We sell SHINY PLUS, so read this as our side by side, then check the sources yourself.

The short version

  • Stellar M22 (Lumenis) is a multi-application workstation. IPL is one module; Nd:YAG, Q-switched Nd:YAG and a 1565 nm non-ablative fractional laser can share the same base. It suits practices that want several technologies on one console.
  • BBL HEROic (Sciton) is a broadband light handpiece that runs on Sciton's JOULE-family platforms, where it sits next to other Sciton modules such as MOXI. It's built for fast, in-motion passes over large areas.
  • SHINY PLUS (IDS Lasers) is a dedicated IPL system: one console, seven filters, and a large 140-cell sapphire tip with contact cooling to 5 °C. It suits practices that want a focused IPL unit without paying for a multi-module platform.

Filters: what you can treat

The filter set decides your menu. All three cover the core med spa indications: pigment, redness and vessels, hair, and rejuvenation.

  • SHINY PLUS spans 415 nm (a blue-violet band used for acne-prone, congested skin) through 530 and 560 nm for vascular, superficial pigment and photorejuvenation work, 590 nm for deeper pigment and vascular targets, and 640, 690 and 755 nm for hair.
  • Stellar M22 adds dual-band acne and vascular filters on top of seven cut-off filters, from 515 to 755 nm.
  • BBL HEROic reaches from 420 nm up to an 800 nm filter, with a narrow-band 532+ filter Sciton positions for small vessels and stubborn pigment.

More filters give you more ways to tune a treatment, but each one adds to the protocol library your staff has to learn. Count the filters you'd actually use every week.

Spot size and speed

Spot size and pulse rate decide how long a full face, chest or back takes, which is how many appointments fit in a day.

SHINY PLUS uses one large 42.6 × 14.3 mm sapphire window split into 140 cells. The design spreads energy evenly across the field and is meant to avoid the "tiger stripe" pattern of uneven coverage. It fires at up to 10 Hz, with clinical use up to 5 Hz. BBL HEROic's 15 × 45 mm crystal and repetition rate up to 12 Hz are built for in-motion passes, and its Finesse adapters shrink the spot down to 3 mm for small targets. The M22 offers three lightguides, from a 35 × 15 mm block down to a 6 mm round, and fires at up to 1 Hz.

Pulse control and cooling

The M22 publishes the highest top fluence of the three, at 56 J/cm², with Multiple Sequential Pulsing. BBL HEROic offers pulse widths up to 200 ms and adjusts fluence in half-joule steps. SHINY PLUS gives you six pulse sequences (Single, Double, Triple, SHR, Dynamic and Stamp), a 0.2–16 ms pulse duration, and contact cooling to 5 °C at the sapphire.

Higher numbers aren't automatically better. Ask which settings your providers will actually use for your patients' skin types, and what training comes with the system.

Platform vs dedicated IPL

This is often the real decision.

  • Choose a platform (M22 or a JOULE-family system with BBL) if you plan to add lasers to the same console and are ready to budget for that ecosystem, including its modules, service and training.
  • Choose a dedicated IPL like SHINY PLUS if IPL is the service you're adding now and you'd rather keep the investment, footprint and training focused. SHINY PLUS is a 49 kg cart unit that runs on 230 V / 6 A.

Whichever you pick, get written answers on flashlamp or handpiece life, consumables, service and loaner policy, warranty term, and training. Our IPL machine cost guide walks through each of those line items.

Running the numbers

Device cost is just one part of the decision. Your price per session, how many sessions you book each week, and your consumable and service costs decide payback. Plug your own numbers into the med spa laser ROI calculator and compare scenarios before you talk to any vendor.

FAQ

Is IPL the same as BBL?

BBL (BroadBand Light) is Sciton's name for its intense pulsed light technology. Like other IPL systems, it uses a filtered flashlamp rather than a single-wavelength laser.

How many filters does each system have?

SHINY PLUS has 7 (415–755 nm). The Lumenis Stellar M22 IPL has 9, including dual-band acne and vascular filters. Sciton's brochure lists 8 filters for BBL HEROic (420–800 nm).

Which has the largest treatment window?

On the published specs, Sciton's 15 × 45 mm crystal and the M22's 35 × 15 mm lightguide are the largest single spots. SHINY PLUS uses a 42.6 × 14.3 mm, 140-cell sapphire window.

Can SHINY PLUS add other lasers later?

No. SHINY PLUS is a dedicated IPL system. IDS Lasers offers separate platforms for other treatments, including SMAXEL fractional CO₂, PICO PREMIUM and Q10 PREMIUM.

How much does SHINY PLUS cost?

IDS Lasers doesn't publish a system price. Request pricing for a written quote, or ask during a 30-minute virtual demo. Financing is available through our financing partners.

Where is IDS Lasers located?

IDS Lasers LLC is in Richardson, Texas, at 1702 N Collins Blvd, Suite 204. We're open Monday to Friday, 9:00 am to 6:00 pm Central.
